The recent release of Tottenham Hotspur’s financial results for the year ending June 30, 2024, sparked more debate about the club’s ambitions.

After revealing a £26.2 million loss, chairman Daniel Levy inevitably attempted to justify his prudent way of running the club.

He spoke about not compromising the club’s financial stability, which is undoubtedly a sensible business decision.

However, many football fans are not concerned with the bottom line. They want success and are not too bothered about how it is achieved.

In fairness to Tottenham fans, their ongoing annoyance with Levy has some justification given they are ranked as the ninth richest club in the world.

While new ownership does not guarantee success, the club appears to have reached an impasse under Levy’s stewardship.

Fans have already protested at how the club is being run, and things will likely escalate when Tottenham host Southampton on Sunday.

With the club languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League, the noise could become deafening over the next few weeks.

Manager Ange Postecoglou is currently on course to become the Spurs boss with the most Premier League defeats in a single season.

The most defeats they suffered in one campaign was 19 in the 1993/94 (42 games) and 2003/04 (38 games) seasons.

Four more defeats from their last nine fixtures will tie the record. A fifth loss would set the Australian apart from other Tottenham managers, and not in a good way.

Levy may look at those statistics and feel the criticism directed towards him is unfair, particularly considering the club’s net spending on players in the last couple of years.

Tottenham spent a net £217m on transfers during that period – more than Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool.

Despite this, Spurs fans have long argued that they are punching below their weight under Levy and want him out of the club.

The only thing now standing between Levy and a fully-fledged civil war is success in the Europa League.

Postecoglou’s comments earlier in the season about consistently winning silverware in his second year with a club have hung like an albatross around his neck.

However, if he can guide Tottenham to the trophy and into the Champions League, the vitriol aimed at Levy would have to subside. If Tottenham fail, the fallout will be spectacular.
