Selhurst Survival: The Lessons Liverpool Must Learn Moving Forward

Well that was a massive relief at the end eh mates. In a match where we should have been so far out of sight by the end, it was nail biting at times and there were a few Huey moments. Nevertheless, Liverpool are top of the league right now and will be into the international break.

Arne Slot now has 9 wins from 10 games so far (can’t escape that Forest one eh) and the crazy period including the international break is now set to begin. It wasn’t pretty and it may have been costly, but we look at the lessons learned from an early victory at Selhurst Park.

Jota The Winner But Infuriating

He’s the match-winner here and it was typical Jota for this goal. Coming alive in the box, his run made sure that Gakpo had only one option to put it in that area and he beat Chalobah to put it through Henderson’s legs. That being said, it’s crazy that he didn’t get at least a hat-trick in this one.

He should have side-footed home from a Gravenberch pin-point pass to make it two and there was a couple more, including an unmarked header from a Trent free kick. It seems to be standard Jota though eh. The worse he plays, the more likely he is to get one. He knows he should have put this one out of sight though.

Victory At What Cost

With the international break coming up and an insane run coming up afterwards, injuries are something we can’t really afford. Alisson has his second of the season already though and as TNT described him as ‘distraught’ near the end, that’s a huge concern. He made three brilliant saves in this one and we really needed him, but it’s a real worry how many games the holy goalie misses.

The chances of Mamardashvilli coming next summer consistently increase. Szoboszlai replaced Mac Allister at half-time and the Argentine had ice on his thigh according to reports. Let’s hope it’s more pre-caution, but there was a cost to this.

Van Dijk The Standard Bearer

Even Stevie Wonder can see that there’s no debate about who the best centre back in the world is. He’s been more than complimented by Ibou Konate, but Van Dijk has been the best player this season, regardless of any other award nominees. The captain was honest afterwards that we could have been a lot better in the second half and the reds needed his leadership to keep out Palace and Simon Hooper.

As our colossus said, we care nothing for what the outside world thinks and anyone talking Saliba needs to take advice from Stevie. Dominant in every metric, sense and eye test that you could put forward. Rumour has it ‘Fletch’ is still crying about that non-penalty too.
