Les Dogues bite back in Rennes

André Gomes struck late to complete a remarkable fight-back in LOSC's 3-1 win in Rennes - a match that could have seen Les Dogues' skid stretch after Amine Gouiri struck for the hosts after just a minute. But Paulo Fonseca's side (6th) are now just two points shy of their opponents on the night (5th)..

THE MATCH LOSC faced a big challenge as they made theatric across the north of France to Brittany: winless in two matches, they were taking on a Rennes side who had won their last ten home league matches - the most recent of which was a 3-0 win over Strasbourg. And things got even tougher right off the bat as Amine Gouiri, who bagged a double in midweek, scored after just 27 seconds! Rennes' high press forced the error from teenage stopper Leny Yoro - in for rested captain José Fonte - and the former OL and OGC Nice striker made no mistake as he coolly curled the ball past LOSC glovesman Lucas Chevalier (1').

Fight-back Les Dogues refused to be cowed, however, and dominated the stats for the rest of the first half, but it wasn't until just before the hour-mark that Fonseca's side made good on the upper hand. After Jonathan David had a goal ruled out for off-side, Edon Zhegrova found the back of the net with a superb first-time effort following a touch from Englishman Angel Gomes (59'). With a comeback on the cards, LOSC piled forward and their pressure paid off when the excellent André Gomes latched onto a poor clearance from Baptiste Santamaria. The Portuguese drew the defence central before spreading it wide for Zhegrova, who found substitute Rémy Cabella in position to beat both Birger Meling and Steve Mandanda and put LOSC in the lead (85'). André Gomes FTW!

Although Rennes had a chance to level it with two minute to go - Gouiri pounced on a cross meant for Arnaud Kalimuendo and Yoro redeemed himself totally with a perfect sliding tackle to deny Meling on the rebound - André Gomes made certain sure of the three points as he capped a brilliant performance with a clinical finish after Mohamed Bayo had smashed a shot off the cross-bar (90'+4). The win sees LOSC (6th) pull up on Rennes (5th) in the race for Europe, cutting the distance to just two points as they get ready for a clash at home to struggling Strasbourg in Round 23. Meanwhile Genesio's men will be looking to avoid consecutive defeats for the first time this season as they travel to Toulouse on Sunday.

THE PLAYER: André Gomes The former Benfica, Barcelona and Everton midfielder was everywhere for Les Dogues on Saturday night, involved in the lead-up to the first two goals before showing plenty of composure to skin Joe Rodon and fire past Mandanda to put the cherry on a superb performance.

The Portuguese has been in and out of Fonseca's squad since November but turns like this one - against direct competitors for Europe who were on a ten-match winning run at home - should weigh heavily when it comes to the game time being handed out in The North. THE STAT: 6 Cutting edge proved the decisive factor in Rennes on Saturday night: both sides had six shots on target, but it was LOSC who emerged 3-1 winners. Bruno Genesio will doubtless  be scheduling more finishing practice in training, but the huge performance from LOSC 'keeper Chevalier, whose dominance in the battle with Gouiri (key saves 37', 45', 53') should not go unappreciated.
