Leonardo Spinazzola was the latest guest of the AS Roma Podcast, where he detailed the emotions following the team’s Conference League victory in May. The Italian fullback also addressed his recent decision to not join Roberto Mancini’s Italy in this season’s first international break.

“On the evening of the final we won in Tirana, we told each other: ‘we don’t fully realize what we have done. We will only know when we return to Rome the following day.”

“For me that particular day represented a feeling of utter freedom and liberation after a very dark and difficult year in my career,” he said referring to his long road of recovery from the ruptured Achilles tendon suffered in EURO 2020.

Spinazzola said the decision to stay in the capital during the international break was a personal request to Italy boss Roberto Mancini. “Yes, it was my request. The coach gave me this week to work on my own and get back on my feet.”

“I will be doing some specific work that I have been missing since July, in fact I have not done anything for the calf muscle and for the whole chain. I asked him for this courtesy and he understood.”

“The injury I suffered a year ago is the worst injury a player like me can suffer. Sometimes I lose my balance, when I want to accelerate I have to put on my weight on the forefoot.”

“I’m trying to recover as much as I can,” he concluded.
