Schalke have confirmed that midfielder Leon Goretzka will join Bayern Munich at the end of the season.
“Leon Goretzka told us at the beginning of the week that he wants to leave Schalke and would like to join up with Bayern Munich in the summer,” Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel confirmed in a press conference on Friday.
The midfielder will remain at Schalke until the end of the season before joining Bayern for free when his contract expires.
“We are very happy that Leon Goretzka, a German international with huge potential, has rejected considerable offers from abroad to join Bayern Munich, thus guaranteeing he will remain in the Bundesliga,” said Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge
Just 22, the midfielder has made 130 appearances for Schalke since joining the club in 2013.
Over the course of the last year he has gone from strength to strength, showing real signs of living up to his incredible potential.
In the summer, Goretzka was joint top goalscorer as Germany won the Confederations Cup and the midfielder is set to play a big role at next summer’s World Cup.
