Leon Goretzka, Thilo Kehrer and David Raum all train individually

Leon Goretzka, Thilo Kehrer and David Raum all trained individually at the team hotel on Tuesday, the DFB confirmed. All three of the players played against Spain on Sunday evening and will most certainly be used in their must-win game against Costa Rica where nothing but a win will do for Die Mannschaft.

The DFB did not comment on why the three players were missing from squad training. The most likely cause will be slight niggles which Hansi Flick would not want to risk just a couple of days away from their third group stage match.

The absence of both David Raum and Thilo Kehrer will be of some concern to Germany fans. The team has already had its defensive issues this World Cup but possibly missing two key defenders will only add unnecessary pressure. Raum has played left back in both of Germany’s games and will start there again if he is fit enough. An adventurous full-back who can provide outstanding crosses, Raum could be a key player against Costa Rica in a game where goals could make all the difference between progressing or going home. Thilo Kehrer played right back against Spain and although struggled at times, he did enough to help his side to a draw. Without a recognised right back in the squad, you feel Kehrer would be starting again if he is fit.
