Having finished second in Ligue 1 – just one point behind champions Paris Saint-Germain – Lens will be hoping to keep hold of the majority of their squad ahead of next season’s Champions League campaign, although their star players are increasingly being targeted by clubs from around the continent.
In particular, Loïs Openda could be set for a move to the Bundesliga, while defenders Facundo Medina and Kevin Danso are being monitored by clubs in the Premier League and in Italy respectively.
As a result, the Sang et Or are on the lookout for characteristically shrewd moves to reinforce the squad. According to Foot Mercato this afternoon, Dutch midfielder Stijn Spierings, who left Toulouse on a free this month, is one of the club’s targets. The Coupe de France winner, though, looks likely to return to his home country given he has an agreement in place with PSV Eindhoven.
Promising Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra has been contacted by Lens, although Marseille are also in for the 19-year-old, who scored three goals and assisted another three this past campaign. On top of Gent striker Gift Orban, Salzburg’s Malian striker Sékou Koïta and, to a lesser extent, Paris FC’s Morgan Guilavogui, are potential candidates as attacking recruits.
