Lens’ Facundo Medina says he “thanked” Lionel Messi for winning the World Cup | OneFootball

Lens defender Facundo Medina was decidedly at the heart of proceedings in his team’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday night, in what was a highly-anticipated top-of-the-table clash.

Having made the headlines in the build-up to the match for claiming he would send Kylian Mbappé home in an ambulance – remarks he later apologised for – the Argentine was arguably the visitors’ best performer, keeping out PSG’s waves of attacks while his team were a man down.

At the end of the 3-1 defeat, Medina was seen speaking to compatriot Lionel Messi, who had scored the hosts’ third of the game just before the break. Speaking to ESPN Argentina in the aftermath, the centre-back explained that he wanted to show his gratitude to the former Barcelona man for bring home the Albiceleste’s third World Cup title last December:

“We just talked. You know what Messi represents, as a person and as a player. To be honest, I congratulated him and thanked him for the World Cup.”

PSG now sit nine points clear of the second-placed Artois side, and have all but wrapped up a record-breaking eleventh Ligue 1 title. For Lens, the race for a Champions League spot is far from over, with Marseille and Monaco hot on their heels – and the late coming up to the Stade Bollaert next week.
