Lena Petermann has taken the Women’s Super League by storm after two goals in two games for a reinvigorated Leicester City side. Calm finishes against Everton and Bristol City respectively have contributed to what could easily be labelled a ‘surprise of the season’ as the Midlands team sit top of the WSL.

So, where did it all begin?

The 29-year-old arrived in Leicester with a wealth of experience across Europe. The U20 World Cup winner spent the bulk of her early career in successful spells across three teams in her native Germany. The foremost was Hamburg, where she spent time as a youth player in and out of the first team. The decision then came to follow in the footsteps of many before her and choose to study and play in the US.

The stint with the University of Central Florida was to only last a year, though. After being named ‘Rookie of the Year’ and winning a campaign in the 2014 U20 World Cup, Petermann accepted a professional contract back in Germany.

“It was a hard decision to make because I liked being here at UCF. I feel I need to take this opportunity,” Petermann stated after making the move.

The most consistent period came whilst wearing the SC Freiburg kit. Petermann went on to spend four successful years in the first team, notching 22 league goals in just under 80 games for the side. Freiburg finished an historic third place in the Frauen-Bundesliga in Petermann’s final season with the Baden-Württemberg club.

After a solitary year at Turbine Potsdam, Petermann made the switch to Montpellier in France — playing under the management of former La Paillade player Frédéric Mendy. The following three seasons saw the forward amass an above-one-goal-per-game average in the league.

Petermann then made the move to Leicester City, a transfer she described as “a dream“. Signing a two-year deal, the German added to the Midlands side’s already impressive attacking roster. She links up with players such as English starlet Shannon O’Brien, Olympic winner Deanne Rose, and WSL icon Aileen Whelan.

With two goals already wrapped up in the first two games, Leicester City fans surely have a gem of a player in their ranks ahead of the rest of the 2023/24 WSL season.
