Leigh Griffiths faces the prospect of being without a club in February after Celtic have reportedly terminated his contract.

The controversial striker will remain on loan at Dundee until the end of this month but will then be allowed to leave Celtic Park on a free when the transfer window closes.

According to sources at Mailsport, Celtic have triggered a clause in Griffiths’ one year deal, which he signed last summer, allowing the club to release him.

Griffiths is named in Dundee’s squad for the upcoming match against Livingston on Tuesday, but the Dark Blues may also wish to cut ties with the player soon as they had initially decided to send him back to Parkhead rather than keep him for the duration of his loan deal.

After learning that Celtic intended to activate the termination clause last week, Dundee manager James McPake decided to retain Griffiths’ services until 31 January, before deciding whether to offer the 31 year old a long term deal.

Should Griffiths knuckle down and perform to the level that his ability enables him to, then he should have no issue securing an extended future on the east coast. However, if he squanders this chance, he will end up a free agent in two weeks time.

Despite this disappointing ending to his Celtic career, it should be remembered that Leigh Griffiths scored 123 goals in his time at the Hoops, winning seven SPFL titles, three Scottish Cups and four League Cups. In that sense, he has more than made his mark and should be fondly recalled for his vital goal in the Quadruple Treble clinching Scottish Cup final.
