Journalist Tom Barclay feels Leicester City defender Jannik Vestergaard has been harshly criticised for his start to the season at his new club.

Vestergaard joined Brendan Rodgers' side in mid-August for £15m, but has perhaps not settled in as quickly as he would have hoped.

What's the latest news on Vestergaard?

Having helped Denmark reach the semi-finals of the Euros over the summer, Vestergaard had barely returned to training at Southampton before he was signed by Leicester.

His lack of pre-season may have hampered him in the opening weeks of the season, as he was limited to a cameo appearance in the side's first game against Wolves, and then missed the next two league fixtures after suffering a knee injury.

The 29-year-old has been back in the team for the last four Premier League games. However, Leicester have conceded seven goals during this period, and look far from secure at the back.

What has Barclay said about Vestergaard?

Barclay fully understands why Leicester added Vestergaard to their squad this summer, and outlined the reasons to GIVEMESPORT.

He said of Vestergaard: “He carries the ball well, he’s got good distribution. He’s not the quickest but he’s obviously a very imposing defender, and he played very well for Denmark so now it makes more sense.

The Sun journalist then acknowledged that it has been a difficult period for the 31-cap international, but he believes too much criticism is being directed the Dane's way.

“Obviously, they’ve had a tricky start to the season. It’s a bit harsh, I think, from what I’ve seen of Leicester, to pin it all on him.”

Is Vestergaard getting too much blame at Leicester?

Rodgers has recently come out and defended the 6 foot 6 centre-back following criticism of his performances, and does not appear to be concerned by Vestergaard's form at the moment. He may have a point.

It has certainly been a disappointing first two months of the season for Leicester, who have picked up just eight points from seven games, which sees them down in 13th place. That is not all Vestergaard's fault, though.

He hardly had a pre-season, and his campaign has been disrupted by an injury, so it is little wonder that he has struggled for consistency.

Still, when he has played, he has actually been Leicester's best centre-back, according to WhoScored, who have given him an average match rating of 6.76.

He has not hit the heights that some may have expected of him yet, but he has only started four league games, and it is far too early to write him off.
