Leicester City should have eyes on these 2 Russell Martin upgrades as new manager twist emerges

There's been a late plot twist in Leicester hunt for a new manager, and the alternative names being mentioned may even be upgrades on Russell Martin.

There remains uncertainty over the vacant managerial position at Leicester City, with reports that Russell Martin may not be the certainty for the job that he may have been earlier in the week.

Leicester haven't sacked their current manager Ruud Van Nistelrooy yet, with Sky's Rob Dorsett reporting that Van Nistelrooy was "yet to sit down with #lcfc bosses to discuss his future", and that he'd now returned to the Netherlands with his family.

It had been widely reported earlier in the week that Leicester and Martin had "reached a full agreement" over the former Southampton boss taking over at The King Power Stadium, as Leicester prepare for life back in the Championship following relegation from the Premier League, and with the possibility of a minimum 12-point deduction hanging over their head.

But Dorsett had a follow-up to his original message, which further clouded the position at The King Power Stadium: "Danny Rohl, Liam Rosenior and Russell Martin remain on their shortlist - though the latter is unlikely at this stage, I’m told"

Danny Rohl's position at Sheffield Wednesday is unclear at present. He has been linked with several different clubs both in England and in his native Germany, including Southampton and Werder Bremen. Rosenior had an excellent season at Strasbourg, finishing 7th in Ligue 1.

But these aren't the only managers available at the moment, and Leicester can think out of the box, when it comes to managerial appointments.

Football League World takes a look at two other possible candidates that could be worth looking at for Leicester, who might be an upgrade on Rohl and Rosenior.

Domenico Tedesco

Italian-German manager Domenico Tedesco's last position was as the coach of the Belgium national team, where he was relieved of his duties in January after a poor run of results.

His club record is excellent, however. In 2022, he took RB Leipzig to the semi-finals of the Europa League before losing to Rangers, while winning the DFB-Pokal.

Prior to that, he was at Spartak Moscow, where he took the club to Champions League qualification in his last season, and Schalke 04, the latter of whom he took to second place in the Bundesliga in his first season in management, at the end of the 2017/18 season.

Although still relatively young, at 39 years old, Tedesco would bring a wealth of experience from both Germany and his spell in Russia to The King Power Stadium with him.

Marco Rose

Rose has been out of work since getting sacked from the RB Leipzig position at the end of March.

He won the DFB-Pokal the year after Tedesco with Leipzig, having taken Borussia Dortmund to the runners-up spot in the Bundesliga a year earlier.

He's had success elsewhere too, winning two Austrian League titles with RB Salzburg in 2018 and 2019, the latter of which formed part of a double, alongside the Austrian Cup. He's recently been linked with the Rangers job.

The Leicester position would be a bit of a step-down for either of these two managers, both of whom have been involved in the Champions League.

But the pull of the English game is still strong, and Leicester have a worldwide reputation as a result of their 2016 Premier League title win.

Both of these two are currently available, and have both worked in more than one country. Both have recently been linked with the vacant Rangers job.

Leicester are desperate to get back to the Premier League and the odds may be stacked against them, with a huge points deduction to overcome.

Getting the services of either of these two managers would be a challenge, but if Leicester are ambitious, they could demonstrate that ambition by shooting for the stars, in terms of making their next managerial appointment.
