Highlights

  • Jannik Vestergaard has been a key player for Leicester City in the Championship, starting in every match except for one due to a suspension.
  • Vestergaard's contract with Leicester is set to expire in just over seven months, and there is no indication of an immediate extension.
  • Anderlecht has previously shown interest in Vestergaard and may pursue him again, especially with an injury to their veteran defender Jan Vertonghen.

Despite their recent blip before the international break which saw them lose two matches in succession, Leicester City have been in splendid form in the Championship - which was to be somewhat expected considering how good their team is on paper.

Plenty of the Foxes' experienced heads from their poor 2022-23 Premier League campaign remained at the King Power Stadium, and they included some individuals who played little to no part in the previous season.

One of those has been Jannik Vestergaard, who did not get a single minute of Premier League action under his belt under Brendan Rodgers, the caretaker duo of Mike Stowell and Adam Sadler and then Dean Smith, although he did appear three times in cup competitions.

The towering Dane was given a reprieve though by Enzo Maresca when he was appointed as head coach over the summer, and aside from a one-match suspension for accumulating five yellow cards in just nine matches, he has been an ever-present in the starting 11 for table-topping City.

Starting alongside Wout Faes at the heart of the defence, Vestergaard ranks among the top 20 players in the Championship on WhoScored ratings, which just shows how settled he is in Maresca's new style.

There is a chance though that the 31-year-old could depart the King Power Stadium in less than a year's time - or perhaps sooner.

What is Jannik Vestergaard's contract situation with Leicester City?

When arriving from Southampton in August 2021, Vestergaard signed a three-year contract with Leicester, but he barely featured under Brendan Rodgers in Premier League action and was merely a backup option.

Now, Vestergaard has just over seven months remaining on his current deal with City, and there's no inclination of an extension coming in the immediate future.

"I just really enjoy it," Vestergaard recently told Tipsbladet after being asked about his contract situation.

"I don't think there were very many people who believed four months ago that I would be in the situation I am in now, so I enjoy it.

"At some point, something has to happen (with his contract), but it doesn't matter to me."

Leicester may have to be quick to offer Vestergaard a new contract though as there is seemingly set to be interest from elsewhere.

Who is set to be interested in Leicester City's Jannik Vestergaard in January?

A few days after the summer transfer window closed in England, Belgian outfit Anderlecht were linked with a late swoop for Vestergaard by Sacha Tavolieri, with their window running almost a week longer.

Eventually though, Anderlecht abandoned their swoop due to an issue with personal terms, leaving Vestergaard at Leicester for at least the first half of the 2023-24 season.

And Belgian publication HLN, via Walfoot, have reported that the Denmark international could be on their list once again, especially with veteran defender Jan Vertonghen recently being struck down with an injury.

With his contract expiring at Leicester in June 2024, Vestergaard could potentially be more open to agreeing personal terms at the Jupiler Pro League outfit, but it remains a case of waiting and seeing.
