Leicester City are hunting down an immediate return to the Premier League.

Since suffering an unfortunate relegation at the end of last season, Leicester have had just one goal in mind: automatic promotion.

Their first Championship campaign in a decade has been a success so far as they look to finish in the top two. With just nine league games remaining, the Foxes sit second in the table and are level on points with league leaders Leeds United after winning 26 of their 37 games this season.

Leicester have a game in hand over their automatic promotion rivals, Leeds and Ipswich, so wil feel confident going into the final stretch. The Foxes were clear at the top of the table for large parts of the campaign, but they recently lost three consecutive league games and were subsequently overtaken by Leeds.

To make matters worse, the club have been hit with some issues off the field over the last few days. Football League World rounds up the latest.

At the end of last week, it was revealed by Sky Sports that Leicester City were charged by the Premier League with alleged breaches of the Profitability and Sustainability rules. As a result, the EFL has placed the club under a registration embargo.

Another result of these alleged breaches is that the club could potentially face a point deduction next season, assuming that they earn promotion to the Premier League.

Sky Sports believe that Leicester could face a point deduction bigger than Nottingham Forest's four-point punishment that was dished out last week.

Leicester have responded with a statement, saying that they have taken legal action against the Premier League and the EFL.

"LCFC will be seeking that each of these proceedings is determined by an appropriate and fully independent legal panel."

"The club is committed to ensure that any charges against it are properly and proportionately determined, in accordance with the applicable rules, by the right bodies, and at the right time."

The future of Abdul Fatawu

Of course, the registration embargo placed on Leicester City could cause issues in terms of building their squad ahead of next season.

One player that may be affected by this is loanee, Abdul Fatawu. The 19-year-old is currently on loan from Sporting CP, and there is a clause in his contract stating that a permanent move will be made if Leicester are to earn promotion to the Premier League.

Portuguese outlet, A Bola, are concerned that Leicester's current embargo will stop a permanent move for Fatawu being made in the summer. Their report states that a return to Sporting CP is the most likely outcome for Fatawu.

That said, it it not known whether the embargo will remain in place if Leicester are promoted to the Premier League, as they will no longer be under the EFL's jurisdiction. Fatawu's Leicester future certainly does remain in the balance though, while this all takes place.

Following the announcement of Leicester's embargo, journalist, Guillem Balague took to X to put a positive spin on the situation and offer a message of support to Leicester City supporters.

"What a situation LCFC and Enzo Maresca find themselves in."

"If they promote, they will get points deducted. If they don't, they won't be able to sign players in the summer."

"Now more than ever, LCFC fans should realise what the team is doing (in the middle of a storm) is extraordinary. Problems after problems and they are top of the table since August (now same points as Leeds with a game in hand)."

The situation is undoubtedly an unwanted one for Leicester and Enzo Maresca, but they must focus on the job at hand, which is to earn promotion to the Premier League.
