It has been reported that veteran Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy is set to extend his stay at the King Power Stadium beyond this summer.

Due to his age, there had been some discussion about whether the 37-year-old would depart at the end of his contract after spending 12 years with the club.

However, it now appears a strong possibility that the former England international will make the transition back into Premier League football with the side after they confirmed the Championship title against Preston North End this week.

It comes as little surprise, as Vardy has shown no signs of slowing down and has been as important to the Foxes as ever this season.

Maresca backs Vardy to stay

Following the confirmation of the second-tier title at Deepdale on Tuesday night, Leicester boss Enzo Maresca gave a hint towards Vardy's future.

After the game, he was quoted by The Mirror saying: “Jamie Vardy is Leicester. Jamie Vardy has always scored goals in his life and he’s going to score goals even when he’s 40, 45. It’s in his blood to score goals. We are very lucky that he’s our player.

“Now we finish [the season], we have a game Saturday, and then we sit. But my feeling is that he’s going to stay – this is my feeling, if I can decide.”

It is now being reported elsewhere that Vardy has already put pen to paper on a new one-year deal, despite interest from Saudi Arabia and the United States.

The striker has made clear his desire to stay with the Foxes for their top-flight readmission, and it looks as though his wish will be granted.

Vardy has proven his worth this season

Despite Vardy being the oldest player in the Foxes' squad by quite some distance, it has not been noticeable on the pitch throughout this campaign.

The Leicester captain has appeared 34 times in the Championship this season, scoring 18 goals and providing a further two assists, making him the Foxes' highest goalscorer this term.

Scoring goals is what Vardy does, and he shows no sign of letting up. It is a rare attribute to be able to consistently pop up in the right positions and find the back of the net, so it is clear why Leicester would want to keep him on to lead them through this promotion.

It is difficult to replicate the passion, commitment, technique and now leadership that Vardy offers, and it seems the Foxes will not need to replicate it for at least another year.

Extension makes sense to all parties

Vardy not only has bags of Premier League experience that will come in useful throughout the next campaign but, more specifically, he has made this jump before with Leicester, when he was a key part of the 2013/14 squad that won promotion from the second tier, finished 14th in the top flight the season after, before going on to win the Foxes' historic Premier League title in 2015/16.

That experience is likely to be crucial for a side that re-enters the first tier under some pressure from the league's Profit and Sustainability Rules, and that is before considering the jump in quality that they are going to find in their new division.

Maresca has also revealed that Vardy cannot join as many training sessions as the rest of the team due to the increased recovery time he requires, but the manager also recognised the fact that this is of little consequence when he's still contributing the number of goals he has managed this season.

It was widely assumed that this season in the Championship could serve as Vardy's farewell tour at the King Power, but the way he's been relied on at the front has shown that there could be more to come from him.

There seems to be another twist in the tale left for Vardy's time at Leicester, but on current viewing, it makes perfect sense.
