The Championship side were ahead after just 70 seconds, when Ellie Mason’s header across the six-yard box was knocked past her own keeper by the unfortunate Missy Goodwin.

Leicester had turned the game round by the mid-point of the first half, Janice Cayman levelling when put through on goal from a Saori Takarada pass and four minutes Shannon O’Brien fired high into the net from the edge of the box.

Birmingham looked to be going in on level terms at the break, when Christie Harrison-Murray’s through ball found Libby Smith who lifted the ball over keeper Janina Lietzig, making it 2-2 on 40 minutes.

The Foxes swiftly regained the lead with Sam Tierney picking out O’Brien whose shot could not be kept out by keeper Lucy Thomas.

They were two goals in front again before the hour mark, Takarada heading home following a Jutta Rantala free kick.

Leitzig had to top a Claudia Walker effort over the bar, before Deanne Rose came off the bench to very quickly for the hosts into a 5-2 lead.

Aileen Whelan got a sixth late on, tucking the ball away when it fell to her in the area.

Tottenham Hotspur take on Charlton Athletic in the second of the Fifth Round ties today at 5.15pm, live on the FA Player and the Adobe WFA Cup’s social media channels.

The quarter-final draw will be made live on BBC One, Monday 12 February at 7.20pm, during the One Show.
