Wesley Fofana spent two seasons at Leicester City from 2020 to 2022 before departing for Chelsea.

The centre-back was a key part of Brendan Rodgers’ side in his debut campaign with the Foxes.

He featured 28 times in the Premier League, as the team earned a fifth place finish in the table (all stats from Fbref).

Fofana was also part of the team that triumphed in the FA Cup final in 2021, lifting the famous trophy for the first time in the club’s history.

However, his time at the King Power Stadium suffered a massive blow during the summer of his second campaign with the team.

A significant injury issue meant he made just seven league appearances for Leicester in his second season.

In the summer of 2022, a high-spending Chelsea made the decision to pursue the signing of Fofana from Leicester once he was back to full fitness.

A deal worth £75 million was agreed in the final days of the transfer market, leading to his exit to Stamford Bridge.

The defender signed a seven-year deal upon his arrival for the Blues, making him one of the most expensive centre-back signings of all time, rivalling Virgil van Dijk and Harry Maguire’s moves to Liverpool and Manchester United, respectively.

However, he has been unable to come close to the heights even Maguire has reached at Old Trafford, let alone van Dijk, during his time with Chelsea so far.

Fofana’s first season in London saw him feature 15 times in the Premier League, as the club struggled under Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter.

The Blues finished 12th in the table, their lowest finish of the 21st century.

Fofana made his debut for his new side just days after completing his transfer, featuring in a 2-1 win over West Ham in the Premier League.

However, his first goal for the club, which came in a Champions League tie against AC Milan, was marked by another injury issue which meant he was substituted in the 38th minute.

The knee injury, suffered in October, meant he missed four months of action before returning to the side in February.

The 23-year-old returned in a 1-0 loss at home to Southampton, coming off the bench in the second half.

Fofana’s first start since returning from injury came in a 1-0 win over Leeds United in March, in which he scored the winning goal.

This was the first of 12 starts in a row in all competitions, with Chelsea also reaching the Champions League quarter-finals.

However, he has yet to feature for the team this year.

The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino as manager in the summer could have been the step forward Fofana needed in his career.

However, he suffered an ACL injury prior to the club’s pre-season tour to the United States, which required surgery.

He has been out of action ever since, with no immediate time frame given for his return.
