The Foxes battled bravely to avoid relegation last season despite going into the Christmas break on zero points. Willie Kirk’s side ended the season five points above relegated Reading.
In total, 16 players have left Leicester City over the summer while the club have made a whole host of impressive new signings. One of those players to join the club in the close season is German keeper Leitzig, a player who initially enjoyed a hugely successful half-season loan with Leicester City last term.
When speaking in a WSL media session, Leitzig said that the club’s ambitions this season go much further than avoiding relegation, they believe that gatecrashing the top half of the table is possible.
“The ambitions are really high because we have a lot of new faces and good quality in the squad,” Leitzig said. “We don’t want to be in a relegation battle and we’re looking for top half.
“The league is really good, other teams have high quality as well, but I think we can achieve top half and we will work hard for it.”
Leitzig went on to say that signing for Leicester City on a permanent basis was a no-brainer and that she is pleased to be able to have a fresh start.
She said “I just loved being at Leicester last season and I am really happy to stay permanently. Arriving (on loan) in January was a really spontaneous decision but from day one, it just felt like home, everyone was so friendly.
“Now, I can settle down and help the team to achieve their goals. We can start from the beginning and I am really looking forward to it.”
Leicester City kick-off the new season against Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Sunday 1 October 2023.
