Leicester City have been denied their first Barclays FA Women’s Super League point after falling to a late defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion this afternoon.

In a game of few quality goalscoring opportunities, The Foxes looked set to come away from the Amex Stadium with a point but the hosts recorded a smash and grab victory thanks to Maisie Symonds’ 93rd-minute free-kick.

Neither keeper was forced into significant action in the first 45 minutes. Danielle Carter fired an effort straight at Leicester City goalkeeper Kirstie Levell before Esmee de Graaf did the same when faced by Megan Walsh at the other end.

Chances were again at a premium at the start of the second half with any goal looking likely to come from a goalmouth scramble or a defensive mistake. Megan Connolly looped a free-kick over the bar for the hosts while Sophie Howard and Sam Tierney saw efforts blocked.

Brighton & Hove Albion pushed forward in search of a winning goal in the final 10 minutes but neither Emma Koivisto or Katie Robinson were able to test Levell.

The game looked set to end goalless until Brighton & Hove Albion youngster Symonds looped a free-kick over Levell and into the far corner of the net in the third minute of stoppage time.

There was time remaining for Leicester City to mount one frantic final attack but Natasha Flint failed to beat Walsh as The Foxes slipped to a seventh consecutive defeat.

Brighton & Hove Albion jump up into the final European qualification spot in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table while Leicester City remain bottom.
