Leicester City will not be hit with a points deduction as they seek a return to the Premier League.

Enzo Maresca’s side were charged last month with alleged breaches of their Profit and Sustainability regulations (PSR) in the previous campaign.

That opened up the possibility of the club facing sanctions which threatened to derail their current bid for automatic promotion from the Championship.

The Foxes announced plans to pursue “urgent” legal action against both the EFL and Premier League following the charge and submitted an interim injunction to the former.

But the EFL confirmed on Friday that they do not have the power to impose a sporting sanction on the club relating to PSR matters which arose during their time in the top flight.

“Having taken legal advice, the EFL has confirmed to all parties that whilst it would want to respect any decision of a Premier League Disciplinary commission (and vice versa) to deduct points in the EFL, it does not have the power under the Regulations as currently drafted,” confirmed a league statement.

“On the basis of that confirmation, the League Arbitration Panel held that the club’s application for an interim injunction was neither necessary nor appropriate.

“The League Arbitration Panel dismissed the club’s application accordingly.”

Leicester will be aiming to temporarily open up a three-point gap on second-placed Ipswich Town when they travel to Plymouth Argyle on Friday.
