Rodgers later said: "I was really proud of the players tonight. When you come here you have to defend well and be strong.

"With a bit more belief, especially in the first half we could have created more opportunities but the team Thomas Tuchel put out was a strong side and the players coped well with it.

"To defend well against the bigger sides you need the concentration and I think we managed that."

On Maddison, he added: "It was a brilliant goal. He has been outstanding. He is just on a really high level at the moment. He is the player out there for us that has that belief. But he has added to his game the workrate, the interceptions and the blocks, you saw that tonight.

"The highest we can finish is eighth and if we do that considering the perception around that Leicester have had a really bad season, it would show how well the players have done over the course of the season.

"For Leicester to be in the top 10 and reach a European final... I have said all along it is perspective.

"We will always fight to compete, that is what we look to do next season."
