Legia Warsaw reclaimed the Puchar Polski after five years on Tuesday afternoon, by virtue of a penalty shootout victory over outgoing winners Raków Częstochowa.

Legia’s thrilling shootout victory came after a feisty, yet often tedious 120 minutes in which neither they or Ekstraklasa leaders Raków were able to break the deadlock. The Wojskowi will have been thrilled to take the game as far as they did, having been reduced to ten men as early as the 6th minute, following a poor challenge and a VAR review.

But sitting back for much of the game, Raków were unable to breach the Legia back line. When they did, young Legia goalkeeper Kacper Tobiasz was more than equal to it.

It was Tobiasz who was also the hero in the shootout. He dived low to his right, to keep out Mateusz Wdowiak’s tame penalty after all of the previous 11 had hit the back of the net.

After a disappointing season for Legia which saw them fail to take advantage of a lack of European football, fans at Łazienkowska 3 will at least have something to celebrate. A 20th Puchar Polski, which now puts them 14 clear of their closest challengers, Górnik Zabrze.

Raków, meanwhile, should at least be able to console themselves with their expected maiden league title. A point at Korona Kielce will be enough to lift the Polish Championship due to their superior head-to-head record against Legia; while they could even celebrate after a defeat, if Legia fail to collect maximum points against Pogoń Szczecin that evening.
