‘Left in the lurch’ – Euro press reacts to Celtic star’s performance on international duty | OneFootball

Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel endured a frustrating night while on international duty as Denmark lost 2-1 against Spain.

The veteran goalkeeper has been sensational for Celtic this season and has kept nine clean sheets in 11 games.

The 38-year-old Celtic goalkeeper was brutally criticised in Denmark’s previous defeat against Spain last month, and he hasn’t received any sympathy from the Danish press either after the latest defeat.

Danish newspaper BT has given him a three-star rating, which means average, and they noted that he was “left in the lurch” by his teammates.

They wrote: “Left in the lurch by his teammates – because he couldn’t do much for the two scores, where the Spaniards got through with ease and passed the first choice in the Danish box.”

The Bhoys goalkeeper made five saves during the game, including two saves inside the box.

At the same time, he also made one error that led to a goal.

What was really frustrating to watch was Schmeichel’s poor distribution. He managed only 68% accurate passing and should have done better with long balls.

The Danish goalkeeper felt that his side were close to getting an equaliser, but David Raya made a fantastic save.

He said: “We were a fingertip away from getting something. It was a fantastic save at the end by their goalkeeper.”

Schmeichel could continue at Celtic next season

Eyebrows were raised when Brendan Rodgers signed the former Leicester City goalkeeper to replace Joe Hart in the summer.

Many expected that Celtic would sign a young goalkeeper, but Rodgers had other ideas.

Schmeichel has played a huge role so far as Celtic have made a flying start to the 2024/25 campaign.

The goalkeeper signed a one-year deal with the Hoops in the summer but has the option of extending the deal to another year.

He has said recently that he doesn’t want to overthink about his contractual situation.
