Reports linking Leeds United with a move for Watford striker Joao Pedro are wide of the mark, according to The Athletic’s Phil Hay.

Yesterday reports in Italy claimed that the Whites were closing in on a loan move for the 20-year-old and were also set to sign Hornets teammate Ismaila Sarr for a £25 million fee.

Leeds Live has since indicated that the Yorkshire club are unlikely to sign Sarr this summer and Hay has issued a stronger verdict.

He took to Twitter this morning to report that those links are wide of the mark and there has been little significant movement toward any new arrivals.

Pedro and Sarr look set to play important roles under new manager Rob Edwards at Vicarage Road this season, assuming they don’t leave in the current window.

The pair have started both of Watford’s Championship games this season and are their only goalscorers to date.

Pedro bagged the winner against Sheffield United in their opener while Sarr scored a sensational lob from inside his own half to give the Hornets the lead against West Bromwich Albion on Monday in a game they’d eventually draw 1-1.

The Verdict

Hay is a trusted source when it comes to Leeds so it seems as though the Watford pair won’t be arriving at Elland Road anytime soon.

A permanent move for Sarr could make sense for both clubs but it is hard to see the sense in the Hornets loaning out Pedro as the 20-year-old looks set for a central role in the club’s promotion push this season.

Keeping the duo would seem to boost Watford’s promotion hopes significantly, which makes this Leeds update a boost for the Vicarage Road support.

There are still weeks to go before the end of the window though so both players could yet leave the club.
