Fresh reports have suggested that Everton are unlikely to sanction the sale of striker Beto to Leeds United this summer.
As they make the step up to the Premier League once again this summer, Leeds United have been granted a proverbial ‘war chest’ but one deal that was rumoured now appears difficult with Everton striker Beto now said to be unlikely to move to Elland Road.
Daniel Farke won his third Championship title as a manager on the final day of the season as the Whites came from behind late on to defeat relegated Plymouth Argyle at Home Park.
There had been speculation that Farke would be sacked by the Whites despite their automatic promotion being confirmed on Easter Monday, but that is not the case and he is instead expected to be backed with £150 million in funds for this summer’s transfer window after chairman Paraag Marathe did promise spending.
Leeds will be looking to add extra firepower to an already exciting attack that produced Championship golden boot winner Joel Piroe this season, but Guinea-Bissau international Beto is now deemed a difficult deal.
According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds’ move for the 27-year-old is now deemed currently unlikely to come to fruition due to the striker situation that David Moyes has at Goodison Park.
Everton are set to only have two strikers under contract going into the summer with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s deal set to expire at the end of this season, whilst Armando Broja is only on loan from Chelsea.
The only other striker set to be at the club alongside Beto is Youssef Chermiti, who has struggled since moving to the club from Sporting CP in the summer of 2023.
The YEP have suggested that the lack of extra striker depth is set to scupper Leeds’ current transfer plans with members of the Everton hierarchy, including former Leeds CEO Angus Kinnear as well as Toffees boss David Moyes, against the sale.
The report goes on to suggest that a deal is not impossible and Leeds could test Everton’s resolve but their sources say that it is ‘difficult to envisage’ the deal being sanctioned by the Merseysiders.
Leeds had been linked with the likes of Davide Ancelotti, Roger Schmidt and Giovanni van Bronckhorst, but those suggestions are now no longer in play with Farke staying in West Yorkshire.
That managerial uncertainty didn’t affect their on-pitch performance, though, as they eventually won the league title on goal difference ahead of Burnley with 100 points collected, winning their final six games of the season.
There remains some uncertainty in terms of the make up of their squad, though, following reports of West Ham United being interested in Ethan Ampadu and Real Betis wanting Mateo Joseph.
They have also been heavily linked with several players, including Marseille defender Leonardo Balerdi and West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek but, like Beto, a move for Sporting CP midfielder Hidemasa Morita has been dealt a blow.
Leeds are expected to embark upon a very busy summer transfer window and they are set to show a fair bit of ambition according to reports with their substantial transfer kitty. However, it does not currently seem likely that Beto will be a part of that busy summer.
