Leeds United are not planning to offer Junior Firpo a new contract, according to The Athletic.

The full-back has made 17 appearances for the Whites so far this Championship season, contributing five assists (all stats from Fbref).

However, his contract is set to expire next year, which has raised questions over his future at Elland Road.

The 27-year-old joined the Yorkshire outfit in the summer of 2021 from Barcelona, but has struggled to ever cement himself as a key figure in the squad.

Firpo made 43 appearances in the Premier League across his first two seasons at Elland Road, starting 33 times, before the club suffered relegation to the Championship in 2023.

Junior Firpo’s Leeds United future

It has been reported that Leeds will be willing to listen to offers for the player in the summer, regardless of their league status.

Sam Byram is out of contract at the end of this campaign, but the club has been quite happy with the impact he’s made since rejoining the team in the summer.

This could indicate that a new contract could be forthcoming depending on the future of Firpo.

Left-back has been a problem area for the club in the recent past, and it is a part of the squad that Farke will be keen to strengthen after the season ends.

The club’s summer business will depend on which league the team is competing in next year, with the Whites fighting for promotion straight back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

Firpo was signed for €15 million (£12.8 million), with Barcelona also set to receive 20 per cent of any future fee for the defender.

This will likely be factored into any asking price Leeds set for the player this summer.

Failure to cash in on Firpo this summer would also mean the club would be at risk of losing him for nothing in the summer of 2025 due to his expiring contract.

Leeds United league position

Leeds are currently second in the Championship table, occupying an automatic promotion place.

Farke’s side moved up to second with a win over Sheffield Wednesday last Friday night, with goals from Patrick Bamford and Wilfried Gnonto sealing an important three points.

The gap to league leaders Leicester City is three points, with just nine games remaining in the term.

Next up for the Yorkshire side is a home game against Millwall on 17 March.

Firpo’s future lies away from Leeds United

Firpo has never quite endeared himself to supporters or the management at Leeds, having been unable to live up to expectations from when he was signed.

While he has had his moments this season, it comes as no surprise that the club will be open to offers in the summer.

Left-back is an area that the club needs to strengthen, and any fee earned for the Spaniard can help reinvest back into improving the first team squad.

It’s unlikely Leeds will be able to recoup the fee paid to sign him in 2021, but they should still be able to earn some money from his potential sale.
