Leeds United are prepared to trigger the release clause in Leicester City midfielder Bilal El Khannouss’ contract, according to Foot Mercato.
El Khannouss, who joined Leicester from Genk, was a standout player despite their relegation last season.
He is keen to remain in the Premier League, making a move away from the King Power Stadium this summer a priority to continue his development at the highest level.
The Moroccan international has emerged as a top target for Leeds, who are keen to boost their creativity in midfield.
Leeds have communicated their intention to pay not only El Khannouss’ release clause but also the associated solidarity contributions and taxes required for the transfer.
This release clause is only active until August 15, meaning that Leeds will need to act fast.
The Whites are aiming to move ahead in their pursuit of El Khannouss before Crystal Palace and RB Leipzig can formalise their approaches.
Palace have earmarked El Khannouss as a potential replacement if Eberechi Eze leaves the club, but he may not be on the market for much longer.
Having already completed seven signings his summer, Leeds have been active in the market as they prepare for life back in the Premier League after winning the Championship last season.
Two weeks on since their first pre-season friendly against Manchester United, Leeds are back in action with a friendly against Villarreal on Saturday.
They complete their preparations for the upcoming campaign against AC Milan the following week.
