Leeds United are one of the leading clubs plotting a January swoop for Ben Brereton Diaz, according to reports…

What’s the word?

Eurosport’s transfer insider Dean Jones has dropped a fresh update on the Whites’ pursuit of the Blackburn Rovers talisman this week, claiming that sources expect the Yorkshire giants to make a serious push to sign him.

However, they face fierce competition from LaLiga outfit Sevilla, as well as a whole host of other Premier League teams, including Newcastle United, Southampton and Burnley.

And whilst he has held talks with the Lancashire side over a contract extension, there is no indication he is prepared to put pen-to-paper, which only bolsters Leeds’ position as his current deal expires in the summer.

Diaz has emerged as an absolute goal machine in the Championship this season, finding the net 16 times in only 20 appearances, building substantially on last season’s tally of seven goals and five assists.

Valued at just £9m by Transfermarkt, United director of football Victor Orta could quite easily land the club an absolute bargain as Rovers could be forced to sell in January, otherwise, they risk losing him for free.

This sort of steal could draw some similarities to their move for Chris Wood back in July 2015 as the Yorkshire giants poached him from Leicester City for just £3m and he proved to be a prolific marksman, too.

Similar in stature to the now-Burnley star at 6 foot 1, Diaz would offer Patrick Bamford some much-needed competition and Bielsa an alternative option in the final third.

Which Argentinian side has Marcelo Bielsa played for and managed?

San Lorenzo Newell's Old Boys Velez Racing Club

Finishing and dribbling are listed as two of his major strengths, having also averaged 2.8 shots and 1.7 dribbles in the second-flight this season, per WhoScored.

Meanwhile, the 22-year-old’s current boss, Tony Mowbray, has previously lauded him as a “beast“, an “extraordinary talent” and “very gifted“, whilst The Sun’s Alan Nixon recently dubbed him a “goal machine.”

It’s thought that Bielsa is a huge fan of his, ever since Leeds played Blackburn in the Championship, so Orta could well seal a special signing with a move for the Chile international this January.

Diaz could well become United’s next Wood-like talisman at Elland Road, should they seal his bargain signature next month.
