Stoke City swooped to sign Axel Tuanzebe on loan from Manchester United last night, in wake of losing Harry Souttar to Leicester City.

Tuanzebe has joined Stoke on loan until the end of the season, with the 25-year-old embarking on his fifth loan spell away from Old Trafford.

Three of those have come with Aston Villa, whilst the other was with Napoli at the start of 2022.

However, it appears that Stoke were not the nailed on destination for Tuanzebe on deadline day, with Leeds United offered the chance to sign the Man United defender prior to his switch to the bet365 Stadium.

The Athletic’s Phil Hay reports: “On deadline day, Leeds looked briefly at Manchester United’s Axel Tuanzebe as additional cover after he was offered to them before deciding to remain as they were.”

Leeds lost Diego Llorente to AS Roma earlier in the day, replacing him with Diogo Monteiro, an 18-year-old talent.

As it is, Tuanzebe links up with Alex Neil at Stoke, with the view of pulling the Potters up the Championship table.

Stoke currently sit 18th in the table, seven points clear of the relegation zone following a 4-0 win over Reading FC in their last Championship fixture.

The Verdict

Tuanzebe should be a reliable pickup for Stoke.

The 25-year-old has bags of talent but has only been able to show that in his career so far, with the nature of that very stop-start with his loan spells.

Ultimately, right now, the Championship and Stoke feels a better fit than Leeds and the Premier League. It offers Tuanzebe that chance to play at a level he can thrive at rather than struggle for minutes in a struggling top-flight side.
