According to the Daily Star, Phillips will reject a move to Leeds’ bitter rivals due to fears over the potential backlash from his boyhood club’s supporters.

The report from Jeremy Cross stated: “The fallen giants want to sign a holding midfielder and were planning to make a move for Phillips in the hope of luring him to Old Trafford in a £60m deal.

“But Phillips has made it clear to those close to him he has no intention of leaving Elland Road for United next summer.

“It is understood Phillips, who is a cult figure at Leeds, has huge concerns about the possible ramifications for his family should he walk out on his hometown club for United.”

Marcelo Bielsa will be buzzing

News that Phillips is expected to rebuff any potential advance from the 20-time English champions will leave Whites manager Marcelo Bielsa buzzing with excitement, given the midfielder’s importance to the side.

After rising through the ranks at Elland Road, the England international has established himself as a key player in Leeds’ first-team squad, scoring 14 goals and providing 13 assists in his 224 appearances.

However, it’s the holding midfielder’s underlying numbers which truly indicate why he is such a highly sought-after star. As per WhoScored, he has averaged 2.4 tackles per league game this term – the joint-highest tally amongst his teammates – as well as 1.3 interceptions.

His eye-catching displays for Leeds have earned the £36m-rated gem 19 caps for Gareth Southgate’s England side, including a start in the Euro 2020 final.

Southgate admitted that Phillips has become a “really important part” of the Three Lions’ recent success, and the same can certainly be said of his exploits at club level.

Therefore, Bielsa and Leeds fans alike will be delighted at Cross’ latest revelation, and they’ll be looking forward to seeing Phillips in an all-white strip for the foreseeable future.
