Leeds United are one of multiple teams in the race for Genk centre-back Mark McKenzie, according to Voetbal Nieuws (via Sport Witness).

The Whites were very busy during the summer transfer window, with plenty of key players departing but also signing some excellent players who can compete at the top end of the Championship and higher.

This recruitment has seemingly paid dividends, with the West Yorkshire side now competing at the top end of the division along with the likes of Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton.

However, they may feel as though they have unfinished business, with the 49ers potentially set to give Daniel Farke the funds to improve his squad further.

Farke's side are yet to make any additions and that isn't a shock considering the Whites' boss previously said he was expecting a quiet month at Elland Road - but there could be movement in the centre-back department.

Both Charlie Cresswell and Liam Cooper have been the subject of speculation this month and with Joe Rodon also set to return to Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the season, this is an area they may need to address.

McKenzie has .

Registering 23 competitive appearances this term, he has recorded one goal and three assists in that time and with this in mind, it's no surprise that the Belgian outfit are keen to keep hold of him.

Whether they will be able to do that remains to be seen though, with Brighton and Hove Albion, Everton and West Ham United all thought to be keen on him.

Leeds have also taken an interest in the 24-year-old, although it's unclear whether the fact they are in the Championship will put them at a disadvantage in this race.

They may have to fork out a decent fee as well, with his contract not expiring until the summer of 2025.

It seems sensible for Leeds to keep an eye on McKenzie and other central defenders.

He certainly has a good enough CV to be a decent asset and Burnley had success in the Belgian market last season, so McKenzie should be a consideration at Elland Road.

With Cresswell and Cooper the subject of speculation, Pascal Struijk being linked with a move away in recent months too and Rodon potentially set to leave the club on the expiration of his loan spell in the summer, this is an area that may need addressing as a matter of urgency.

Cresswell needs to be given the opportunity to play football and if he goes, that would leave one less option.
