According to The Sun, Leeds United are plotting a swoop for Daniel James. The newly-promoted Premier League outfit are confident of securing the services of the Manchester United forward, either on loan or as a permanent transfer. Leeds believe James could cost around £12 million, plus add-ons after failing to make an impression under Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer.

Daniel James’s Decline At Manchester United

James joined Manchester United from Swansea last summer. He was then regarded as one of the rising stars in British football, having enjoyed a stellar 2018/19 campaign in the Championship.

The Welshman was involved in a total of nine goals in 33 league matches during his debut campaign at Old Trafford. He showed signs of his brilliance but lacked game-time as well as consistency.

Meanwhile, for Manchester United, the January arrival of Bruno Fernandes, combined with the rapid rise of Mason Greenwood didn’t help James’ cause as it brought him deep down the pecking order.

At the moment, James is considered as only a back-up for the likes of Marcus Rashford, even though the winger did start ahead of Greenwood in the game against Crystal Palace. He was replaced at half-time.

Why James Could Be A Massive Coup For Leeds United

Leeds United have shown tremendous promise during these early stages of their return to the top-flight. The Whites have already netted seven goals in two matches, with wingers like Jack Harrison and Helder Costa making quite an impact. Costa, in particular, netted two goals in the recent win over Fulham.

However, it remains doubtful whether or not these two can maintain their consistency throughout the course of the campaign. Besides, the alternatives Marcelo Bielsa currently has in Ezgjan Alioski and Ian Poveda do not necessarily have the top-flight experience. That is where James could be useful.

The Manchester United star is, in fact, a tailor-made fit for Bielsa’s tactical philosophy as he has the pace to make himself a scourge for the defenders on the counter. It has been evident with his performances for the Red Devils as well.

Also, the Welshman is blessed with quick feet and an ability to drift past defenders, which should add more unpredictability and quality in the Leeds United attack. But more importantly, James now has a year of experience at the highest level of football which could be useful for an otherwise inexperienced attacking unit Bielsa has at his disposal right now.
