Transfer News: Leeds United want Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher on loan

According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Leeds United are eyeing another Chelsea midfielder in 21-year-old Englishman Conor Gallagher.

Gallagher was out on loan at West Bromwich Albion last season, and at Swansea City the year before that. The Blues are unwilling to sell him permanently but are open to another temporary move. (h/t The Athletic) [Subscription Required]

The report mentions that Thomas Tuchel does not have Gallagher in his plans for the next 12 months and that Crystal Palace are also eyeing the young Englishman during the summer transfer window.

The Whites have already signed a young English midfielder from the Blues this summer. Academy prospect Lewis Bate has completed his transfer to Elland Road for a £1.2million fee.

Leeds want Gallagher

While Bate is in their reserve squad, any move for Gallagher should mean he plays with their first team. At 21, he is older than Bate and boasts of regular Premier League starts at the Hawthorns last season.

The Blues would be smart to sanction a loan deal but must ensure that Gallagher is not sold permanently. It is important for the club to keep hold of their most promising young talents with the future in mind.

Right now, N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic will probably keep Gallagher out of the first-team. But once space starts opening up in Chelsea’s midfield in the future, Gallagher can be made a regular first-team player.

The same would hold true for another talented midfielder, Billy Gilmour. The 19-year-old Scotsman left Chelsea to join Norwich City on a loan deal earlier this summer, and alongside Gallagher, is a bright prospect for the future.
