Don Goodman has issued his prediction for Leeds United's upcoming Championship campaign
Don Goodman has predicted Leeds United to win the Championship title this season.
The Whites will be aiming to earn a top two spot in the standings this year after coming third in the previous campaign.
Daniel Farke’s side narrowly missed out on promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt, having also lost the play-off final.
But expectations will be high at Elland Road this season that they can go one step further and return to the top flight.
Pressure will be high on the German coach to deliver results, otherwise he will be at risk of losing his position with the Yorkshire outfit.
Goodman believes that Leeds will be the strongest team in the second division this year, citing the drop-off in quality of the relegated Premier League sides compared to last year.
He has acknowledged the losses of Crysencio Summerville, Archie Gray and Glen Kamara, but is positive on the club’s incoming transfer business.
“I've got to go with Leeds United as champions,” Goodman told FLW (via Grosvenor Sport).
“I don't think that the three relegated teams are as strong as Leicester, Southampton and Leeds were last season.
“Again, we've still got to wait and see what the exact makeup of the squads is once the transfer window slams shut.
“Leeds United's performance last season, in every other single Championship season, would have got them promoted.
“The top four last season as a group of four, rather than as individual teams, was the best I've ever seen.
“I don't think it's going to be of the same level this season and that is with respect to Burnley, Luton and Sheffield United.
“I've stuck with Leeds because, despite losing the play-offs, they should look at the likes of Sheffield United, Bournemouth, and Brentford and themselves of previous years, who all bounced back and got promoted following play-off heartbreak.
“I know they've lost Archie Gray, they've lost Glen Kamara and Crycensio Summerville, but I like what they've done bringing in Jayden Bogle.
“I like Joe Rothwell as he’s a different type of midfielder and I would probably expect more signings yet to come through the door. Signings of quality.
“In Daniel Farke, you've got somebody who's been there, seen it, got the t-shirt and nearly pulled it off last season.
“So I would have to say Leeds United to win the Championship.”
Leeds have signed Joe Rothwell on loan from Bournemouth for the upcoming season to bolster their midfield option.
Alex Cairns and Jayden Bogle have also joined Farke’s side, arriving from Salford City and Sheffield United respectively.
The arrival of Joe Rodon on a permanent basis will also be welcomed by supporters after his impressive spell on loan at Elland Road last year.
Leeds’ campaign gets underway on Saturday with a home game against the newly-promoted Portsmouth.
Despite losing some important players, there are still a lot of talented players in the Whites’ squad.
The likes of Georginio Rutter, Wilfried Gnonto and Ethan Ampadu will be key to a promotion push this year.
Farke’s side reached 90 points last year, which would be enough for promotion most seasons, so they have what it takes to compete at the top.
While plenty of clubs will be eyeing a top two spot, Leeds will be considered by many to be favourites to take home an automatic promotion place.
