Leeds United could revive their interest in Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O'Brien when the transfer window reopens in January, according to JustJoe Football Show presenter Joe Wainman.

O'Brien is in talks to sign a new Huddersfield contract, with his current deal set to expire next summer.

It comes after Terriers chief executive Mark Devlin revealed the Championship club turned down two bids from an unnamed club during the summer transfer window.

Leeds and Crystal Palace were known to be among O'Brien's suitors and according to the Sun, via Leeds Live, O'Brien would have preferred a move to Elland Road over linking up with a new-look Palace side under Patrick Vieira.

£8million by his current employers during the window and a deal could not be struck as Leeds were only willing to part with half of that fee.

Interest in the 22-year-old came after he impressed in 42 appearances for Huddersfield last season. O'Brien scored three goals and registered as many assists in the process.

While the central midfielder missed the opening two clashes of the Championship campaign as uncertainty over his future continued, he has gone on to be an integral member of the Terriers' squad and also showed his attacking capabilities by netting in the win over Reading last month.

What has Joe Wainman said about O'Brien?

Former All Leeds TV anchorman Wainman believes the Whites are eyeing O'Brien's contract discussions at Huddersfield with interest.

He believes, with O'Brien entering the final months of his deal, Leeds could return to their Yorkshire neighbours with another bid when the transfer window reopens at the turn of the year.

Wainman told GMS: "Lewis O'Brien could be available but there is also noise that he could sign a new deal with Huddersfield.

"He only has one year left on his deal so I'm thinking Leeds could go back for him. It's clear Leeds need a centre midfielder."

Did Luke Ayling score on his Premier League debut for Leeds United?

Yes No

Would O'Brien break into Leeds' midfield?

Leeds have made a disappointing start to the new campaign, suffering a heavy opening day defeat to arch-rivals Manchester United before losing 3-0 to Liverpool at the weekend.

Boss Marcelo Bielsa has four central midfielders - in the form of Kalvin Phillips, Mateusz Klich, Adam Forshaw and Jamie Shackleton - at his disposal following the closure of the summer transfer window.

But, with the Whites already conceding 11 top flight goals, Bielsa could be open to making alterations to his preferred midfield.
