Leeds: 'Six-figure deals' could convince £110m duo to stay at Elland Road

Leeds United should prioritise tying Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha down to ‘six-figure deals’ at Elland Road if they fend off relegation to the Championship, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Whites dropped into the Premier League’s bottom three following their 2-1 defeat to Arsenal at the weekend, resulting in further uncertainty over whether Phillips and Raphinha will still be on the Yorkshire giants’ books by the time next season gets underway.

What’s the latest news involving Phillips and Raphinha?

According to 90min, Leeds have put new contract talks with Phillips and Raphinha on hold until there is clarity over which division they will be involved in next term.

The report suggests discussions have been put on the back-burner despite 19-cap England international Phillips waiting on fresh terms for a prolonged period of time and Raphinha being happy at Elland Road.

Phillips’ £38,000-per-week contract still has more than two years remaining, while Raphinha’s £63,000-per-week deal will also expire in the summer of 2024.

The duo would reportedly be available for modest fees averaging close to £30million if Leeds fail to maintain their Premier League status.

That makes it even more crucial for Jesse Marsch, who was appointed as the Whites’ head coach in February, to steer the Yorkshire side to safety.

What has Dean Jones said about Phillips and Raphinha?

Jones believes Phillips and Raphinha, who are valued by Transfermarkt at £45million and £40.5million respectively, would be willing to remain at Elland Road if they were offered considerable pay rises.

While the transfer insider understands that will only be possible if Leeds remain in the top flight, he feels Marsch should look to make that his key piece of business during the summer.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “If they were to offer Phillips and Raphinha six-figure deals, there is potential that both of them will stay.

“I think that should be a priority, if that’s the case, and then find little bits and pieces that fit around them.”

Which clubs have been showing an interest in the duo?

Aston Villa are willing to offer £60million in order to lure Phillips away from his boyhood club, while they could also sweeten the deal by putting a contract worth £10million-per-year on the table.

Manchester United are known to be admirers of the 26-year-old, although it is understood that Phillips would not consider joining Leeds’ arch-rivals, while West Ham United could return to the negotiating table after having a £50million bid rejected in January.

The Hammers failed with a similar proposal for Raphinha during the winter window and the east Londoners have maintained their interest.

But Barcelona appears to be the 25-year-old winger’s most likely destination as Spanish sources have revealed he has set his sights on forcing through a summer switch to the Nou Camp.
