Leeds United have joined the race to sign Chelsea striker Armando Broja this summer as they look to recruit a back-up to Patrick Bamford, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Jesse Marsch has overseen a busy window at Elland Road but the club remain eager to bolster their attacking options ahead of the September 1 deadline.

The club suffered a blow this week with striking target Arnaud Kalimuendo set to join Rennes from Paris Saint-Germain after rejecting a move to West Yorkshire.

Recruiting a backup to Bamford has been a priority for the club this summer after the marksman missed 30 games for Leeds last season with injury.

Despite already splashing £95 million on summer signings, more big names continue to be targeted.

Southampton forward Che Adams is under consideration for a transfer, as is Watford ace Joao Pedro.

However, they have now joined in chasing another striker.

What has Jones said on Broja?

Jones understands that the Chelsea forward is the latest player to join their list of targets ahead of deadline day.

The transfer insider adds that the club have found it difficult to tempt stars to the club in the knowledge they will play backup to Bamford.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “Armando Broja, they’ve also got him on their radar now. They just haven’t had the openings that they wanted when they’ve made inquiries about players as basically a backup for Patrick Bamford. Part of that will be that some players just don’t want to be a backup, part of it is that clubs haven’t been willing to do business.”

Do Leeds stand a chance?

Honestly, it seems unlikely that they will be able to convince Broja to join them this summer, after the ‘dangerous‘ frontman impressed Ralph Hasenhuttl last season.

The 20-year-old, who is valued at £50 million by his parent club, has made it clear that he wants to play regular football next season so it is difficult to see him swapping his position on the bench at Chelsea for the same role at Elland Road.

Signing a backup for Bamford should remain a priority, however, and it is a task that grows in importance with each passing day.

Pedro only mustered three goals in 31 appearances in the Premier League last season, leaving Adams as the most appealing option at the moment.

Although convincing the Southampton forward to play a supporting role could, once again, prove difficult with Nottingham Forest also in the race.
