Leeds United have to offer Jack Harrison a “big deal” if they want to keep hold of him, says journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The English winger continues to be linked with a move to Newcastle United, but it is believed that his current employers want to tie him down to a new contract.

What is the latest news involving Harrison?

According to Football Insider, Leeds are set to open talks with Harrison over a fresh deal.

The above comes after Newcastle tried to sign him during the summer. As per The Athletic, the Magpies made two unsuccessful bids for the 25-year-old, with the second one thought to have been worth over £20m.

Their interest does not seem to have cooled, though. A recent report from 90min claims that he is still a target for Newcastle.

Harrison’s £60,000-a-week contract is up in 2024, so Leeds may soon find themselves in a tricky spot with him.

What has O’Rourke said about Harrison’s Leeds future?

With Newcastle sniffing around, O’Rourke thinks Leeds are going to have to offer Harrison a lucrative contract to keep him at Elland Road.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the journalist said: “I think Leeds are going to have to offer him a big deal, especially when you’ve got the likes of Newcastle waiting in the wings, maybe, to try and sign him. Money is no object for them as we all know.”

How has Harrison started the season?

Harrison has impressed in this early part of the new Premier League campaign. In six appearances, the former Manchester City man has scored one goal and set up another three.

He was a key player under Marcelo Bielsa, playing 154 games during the Argentine’s tenure at Elland Road, and that also looks to be the case under his successor Jesse Marsch.

As well as the threat he brings in attack, Marsch is also likely to appreciate his defensive work. As per FBref, Harrison has ranked in the 86th percentile for pressures, the 85th for tackles, the 83rd for interceptions, the 97th for blocks and the 92nd for clearances among his positional peers over the last year.

For a team that likes to press and win the ball high up the pitch, Harrison is more than a good fit.

Considering all of the above, Leeds should be looking to keep hold of the winger. However, his contract situation and Newcastle’s interest could make that tricky.
