Leeds United have been tipped as a potential landing spot for RC Strasbourg defender Alexander Djiku by The Guardian’s Ed Aarons.

The 28-year-old has entered the final 10 months of his current £17,000-per-week contract with the Ligue 1 outfit, sparking speculation of an imminent switch to the Premier League.

What is the latest news involving Djiku?

GhanaSoccerNet have recently claimed that both Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton are eager to prise Djiku away from Strasbourg in the January transfer window.

Wolves lost three senior centre-backs over the summer in the shape of Conor Coady, Romain Saiss and Willy Boly and are believed to be leading the race for Djiku’s signature.

However, the Ghana international could catch the attention of several other sides should he recover from injury in time to feature at this month’s World Cup.

The 6 foot ace faces a race against time to prove his fitness for the showpiece event in Qatar where he could really put himself in the shop window.

What has Aarons said about Djiku?

Aarons doesn’t believe that Djiku is ‘ready’ for the ‘top-level in the Premier League’ just yet and named Leeds as the sort of club who may be taking a keen interest in him.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “He’s been doing pretty well. He almost went to Hoffenheim in the summer, I think.

“There’s a problem that he might have with an injury, they’re just waiting to see what happened over the weekend, but he’s in the Ghana preliminary squad. Another really good player, a good solid defender who’s a good age as well at 28 now.

“I don’t think he’s ready for sort of the top-level in the Premier League yet, so somebody who is sort of down the lower end will probably be looking at him, maybe Leeds or somebody like that.”

Would Djiku be a good signing?

Djiku has made 12 Ligue 1 appearances this season, scoring one goal, while also putting up some impressive underlying numbers.

As per WhoScored, he has won 2.8 aerial duels, made two tackles, pulled off 1.9 interceptions, 3.8 clearances and 0.7 blocks on average per top-flight fixture, placing him in the top two for each metric when compared to his teammates.

Whether Leeds make a move for Djiku remains to be seen, but it appears as though he could be a valuable addition to Jesse Marsch’s first-team squad.
