Leeds are “considering” a move for Blackburn striker Ben Brereton Diaz, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Jesse Marsch has welcomed seven new players on board since the market opened for business, but the Elland Road outfit are yet to sign a frontman.

What’s the latest news involving Brereton Diaz?

Leeds have replaced Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha with the likes of Tyler Adams, Marc Roca, Brenden Aaronson and Luis Sinisterra, with three of those four featuring in their opening day victory over Wolves last weekend.

But the Yorkshire giants have so far been unsuccessful in their attempts to sign a striker to provide competition and cover for Patrick Bamford, who suffered with injury problems last term.

That could soon change, with The Sun reporting that Leeds could join the race to sign for Brereton Diaz, who’s set to cost around £20m with less than 12 months remaining on his Blackburn contract.

The report claims that Spanish giants Sevilla are also in the running and could be joined by Everton and Bournemouth.

What did Jones say about Brereton Diaz?

When asked for an update on Leeds’ striker search, Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “There’s a few backup options for them, Brereton Diaz is one of them and he’s one they’re considering.”

Would Brereton Diaz be a good signing for Leeds?

The Chile international, described as a ‘wonderful talent‘ by Tony Mowbray, might have a lack of Premier League experience, but he was one of the standout players in the Championship last season.

In 36 second-tier games, Brereton Diaz registered 21 goals and three assists, and was behind only Dominic Solanke and Aleksander Mitrovic in the goalscoring charts.

Despite Brereton Diaz’s exceptional form, that was his first proper campaign as a regular striker, compared to previous seasons when he’s generally been used out wide.

Couple that in with the fact he’s never played in the top-flight, it might be seen as a risk for Leeds to pay £20m, especially after watching Adam Armstrong, Brereton Diaz’s ex-teammate, struggle to cope with the jump from Championship to Premier League.

But if Bamford manages to keep himself fit, which is looking promising after he came through pre-season and the Wolves game unscathed, and Brereton Diaz arrives as nothing more than a squad player for the time being, then Leeds could do far worse in that sense.
