Highlights

  • Izzy Brown's promising career was cut short at the age of 26 due to a series of injuries, including rupturing his achilles tendon for a second time.
  • Brown had a successful loan spell at Huddersfield Town in the 2016/17 season, where he showcased his skills and scored seven goals with five assists.
  • Despite his potential, Brown was unable to make an impact at Brighton, Leeds, and Sheffield Wednesday, failing to score goals and struggling with injuries throughout his career.

Former attacking midfielder Izzy Brown retired from football at the age of just 26 back in April, after rupturing his achilles tendon for a second time.

Before a big move to Chelsea, the ace became the second-youngest player in Premier League history when he made his debut for West Brom at 16 years old in May 2013.

A two-time England Under 20 international, Brown would go on to spend the majority of his career in the Football League, most recently spending the 2021-22 season at Preston North End, but failing to make a single appearance for the Lancashire outfit.

Unfortunately, the former Chelsea man was never really offered the opportunity to have a settled football career, and was loaned out by the Premier League giants to several clubs from 2015 until 2021, when he was released by the Blues and joined Preston on a permanent basis.

A loan spell at Huddersfield Town was arguably the only spell in his career Brown was able to show the footballing world what he could do, as the ace really expressed himself in a Terriers shirt.

Izzy Brown's time at Huddersfield

During a loan spell at the Kirklees Stadium in the second half of the 2016/17 season, Brown enjoyed the most productive time of his career as he scored four goals in 18 Championship appearances.

The attacking midfielder also had a successful loan spell at Rotherham in the first half of that campaign, scoring on three occasions in 20 second-tier appearances.

Brown finished the 2016/17 season with a total of seven goals and five assists, making that campaign by far the most clinical of his ten-year career in senior football.

The Terriers won promotion to the Premier League in 2017, defeating Reading on penalties after a 0-0 draw in the Championship play-off final, as Brown started in both legs of the play-off semi-final win over Sheffield Wednesday, as well as the final itself.

During his tenure at the Terriers, Brown proved he was a player who could be a real difference maker in the Championship, but elsewhere in his career, he never lived up to the same standards.

Brown was unable to make an impact at Brighton, Leeds or Sheffield Wednesday

After helping the Terriers win the Championship play-off final, the next logical step in the ace's career was to move up to the Premier League, and that's exactly what he did, as Chelsea loaned him out to Brighton, who were promoted alongside the Terriers, losing out on the 2017 Championship title to Newcastle by just one point.

But Brown was unable to make an impact in a Seagulls shirt, scoring no goals, and making no assists as he started just four top-flight games, making 13 Premier League appearances for the south coast outfit in total.

After a poor spell in the top-flight with the Seagulls, both Brown and Chelsea hoped that a loan move to Leeds in the 2018-19 season would get his career back on track.

The best football of Brown's career had come during a spell in West Yorkshire with the Terriers, so Leeds would hope that he could emulate his 2016/17 form two seasons on.

However, this did not transpire, as an injury-hit campaign would ensure that Brown was only able to make two appearances for the Whites and managed to play just nine minutes of Championship football.

This was a set-back the former West Brom man was never able to recover from, as loan moves to Luton Town and Sheffield Wednesday did not revitalise the ace's career.

His spell at the Owls was particularly disappointing, as Brown managed just one assist and no goals in four starts and 21 Championship appearances in the 2020/21 season, in which the Owls were relegated.
