Leeds United have put Marcelo Gallardo 'high on their list' of managerial candidates to succeed Jesse Marsch at Elland Road, journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The Whites are still on the lookout for a new head coach after sacking Marsch last week, with Michael Skubala remaining in caretaker charge while owner Andrea Radrizzani and director of football Victor Orta continue to assess their options.

According to The Telegraph, Gallardo has worked his way onto Leeds' radar due to being admired by members of the Leeds hierarchy, particularly Orta.

The report suggests the Yorkshire side are seeing the Argentinian as a 'true long-term successor' to Marcelo Bielsa, who was axed 12 months ago.

Leeds are not the only Premier League club to have taken an interest in Gallardo as fellow strugglers Southampton have joined the battle for his services.

But, in a blow for both sides, the 47-year-old appears to be disinterested in moving into either job at this stage of the season and would only consider taking a role in the summer.

Leeds are not solely focused on Gallardo and CBS reporter Ben Jacobs recently told GiveMeSport that Pedro Martins is 'creeping into the mix' for the Elland Road post.

What has Dean Jones said about Gallardo?

Jones understands Gallardo is being viewed, behind the scenes, as a leading contender to take over as Leeds' new boss.

But the journalist has warned it may be difficult for Radrizzani and Orta to convince him to head to the Premier League for the first time in his career after an erratic search for Marsch's successor.

When asked about Leeds' managerial targets, Jones told GiveMeSport: "I know Gallardo is one of the names high on their list.

"But they've already failed with the last three or four managers that they've considered for this job since Marsch has gone. They're starting to look pretty desperate.

"Anyone they turn to here is going to really have to talk to people about what the situation is and ask why am I fifth choice for this job? Why are you turning to me right now?"

Would Gallardo be a good appointment for Leeds?

Gallardo has a promising managerial record as, according to Transfermarkt, he has won 255 of his 463 matches in the dugout.

The South American could also offer Leeds some much-needed stability as, while he is currently without a club after leaving River Plate last year, he averages close to five years in each job.

Gallardo has clinched a host of trophies, including the Copa Libertadores on two occasions, so there is no doubt that he would bring a winning mentality to Leeds.

He has also gained admirers for his work, with Manchester City chief Pep Guardiola describing his success at River Plate as 'incredible'.

Having averaged 1.78 points-per-game during his reign with the Buenos Aires-based giants, it is clear that Gallardo would be an exciting replacement for Marsch.
