Chelsea had a day to forget as they were beaten 3-0 by Leeds United in their Premier League clash on Sunday afternoon.
The Blues went into the match at Elland Road having picked up four points from their opening two games to start the season.
But they were handed their first defeat of 22/23 as they were second best throughout at Elland Road.
Edouard Mendy’s epic howler gave Leeds the lead in the 33rd minute.
The Senegalese goalkeeper decided against clearing the ball despite being under serious pressure from Brenden Aaronsen.
The American midfielder proceeded to dispossess Mendy and finish into an empty net.
Rodrigo made it 2-0 to Leeds shortly after when he headed home from a set-piece. Leeds took a three-goal lead in the second half thanks to Jack Harrison’s goal.
Things went from bad to worse for Chelsea when Kalidou Koulibaly was sent off with five minutes of the game remaining.
The 31-year-old, who signed for the Blues in a big money signing from Napoli in the summer, was given a yellow card in the first-half after pulling back Aaronsen.
He was then given his marching orders in the 85th minute. Koulibaly found himself out of position as Leeds launched a counter-attack.
Koulibaly decided to stop the counter in its tracks as he pulled Joe Gelhardt down some 35 yards away from Chelsea’s goal.
The referee had no choice but to give Koulibaly a second yellow card and his marching orders.
What was Koulibaly thinking? You certainly don’t expect to see that from someone so experienced.
Chelsea had already lost the game and there was no chance of a comeback.
With Koulibaly already on a yellow card, there was only going to be one outcome.
He will now be suspended for his side’s Premier League clash against Leicester City next weekend.
Leeds have moved up to second in the table following their victory, while Chelsea are currently down in 12th.
