Leeds United should look to land Southampton striker Che Adams as he ‘would be a good fit’ for Jesse Marsch’s Elland Road squad, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Whites got the new campaign off to a positive start thanks to registering a 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on the opening day, but Marsch could still add reinforcements before the September 1 deadline.

What’s the latest news involving Adams?

According to The Sun, Leeds are lining up a move for Adams and are looking to secure their target for £10million.

The report suggests that Southampton are hoping to secure a higher fee for the 19-cap Scotland international, but there is optimism that a compromise figure can be reached.

Leeds boss Marsch, who was appointed as Marcelo Bielsa’s successor in February, has potentially been boosted in his pursuit.

That is because it is understood that Southampton chief Ralph Hasenhuttl is willing to offload Adams before the transfer window slams shut.

The 26-year-old has been on Saints’ books since making the £15million switch from Birmingham City in 2019, but it appears his days at St Mary’s may be numbered.

What has Dean Jones said about Adams?

Jones is not surprised that Adams has worked his way onto Leeds boss Marsch’s radar ahead of the transfer deadline.

The journalist believes the Southampton star would be a shrewd addition to the Whites’ squad.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “I can see why they would want to land him. They need that central option up front far more than they need another wide player, in my opinion.

“They keep getting linked to wide players, but they’ve got loads of them so I think Che Adams would be a good fit.”

Why is Adams of interest to Leeds?

Although 21 goals in 110 Southampton appearances is not particularly eye-catching, Adams has plenty of Premier League experience.

Statistics show that he was also in the 96th percentile for the percentage of shots on target among strikers in the top flight last season, emphasising that he regularly calls the goalkeeper into action and can be a menace in the final third of the pitch.

Leeds may have spent close to £100million on new signings since the transfer window reopened, but Marsch has failed to sign a single centre forward.

That means Patrick Bamford is the only senior striker at the club, with youngsters Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood providing alternative options.

Adams would be a clever addition, particularly with Arnaud Kalimuendo on his way to Rennes from Paris Saint-Germain despite extensive interest from Leeds.
