Former Birmingham City boss Lee Clark insists ‘belief is key’ as his former club look to secure their safety on the final day in the Championship.

Birmingham City’s relegation chances

Gary Rowett’s side head into the last game of the campaign knowing that they realistically need a victory to have any chance of staying in the Championship.

If Blues do pick up three points against a Norwich City side that are set for the play-offs, they will be above the relegation zone providing Plymouth Argyle fail to beat Hull City, or if Sheffield Wednesday lose at Sunderland, whilst they would also overtake Blackburn with three points if Rovers lose at Leicester City.

So, whilst the situation isn’t in Birmingham’s hands, there are several ways of ensuring their safety - as long as they overcome the Canaries at St. Andrew’s.

Birmingham City can call on past experience

Blues have flirted with relegation regularly over the years, but none more so than ten years ago, when they went to Bolton Wanderers on the final day.

With fellow strugglers Doncaster losing at Leicester, Birmingham needed a point to stay up.

However, they appeared destined for League One when current striker Lukas Jutkiewicz put the Trotters two up with 14 minutes to go.

Yet, Nikola Zigic would pull one back for Lee Clark’s side two minutes later, and Paul Caddis would make himself a Blues hero by scoring in stoppage time, sparking wild scenes among the players, staff and the away end.

Even though none of the players are still around from that memorable day, Paul Robinson was part of the Blues XI, and he is now back as part of Rowett’s backroom team.

Lee Clark sends passionate Birmingham City message

Taking to Instagram, the former defender issued a passionate message that referenced the comeback at Bolton, as he insisted they can repeat that feat once again this time.

And, it brought a response from Clark, as he wished his former club well and explained the important role the fans can play in helping the team over the line.

You are right Robbo. The bluenoses will be out in force and will give the players their unwavering support just like that day at Bolton Wanderers FC.

BELIEF IS THE KEY.

Survival is huge for Birmingham City

Despite their on-field struggles, it’s actually an exciting time to be a Birmingham fan, as the new ownership group led by Tom Wagner have some big plans for the club, including an impressive new stadium.

So, relegation to League One wouldn’t be the end of the world, but it would be a significant setback for a club that wants to be pushing to reach the Premier League.

There’s no doubt that mistakes were made in terms of the managerial decisions this season, but the hierarchy recognise that, and they will just be hoping it doesn’t contribute to their relegation.

It promises to be a tense, dramatic game against Norwich, but Blues will be confident that they can pick up three points against a side that may have an eye on the play-offs, and they will then be checking scores all afternoon to see if it’s enough.
