Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole admits he never thought he would miss the decisive penalty in the Checkatrade Trophy.
The Black Cats lost on spot kicks to Portsmouth at Wembley, with their domestic form spiralling since.
However, now in the play-offs, Cattermole insists he is ready to make up for his miss by guiding Sunderland back to the Championship.
“It was a brilliant game, and I felt good stepping up,” he told reporters.
“It never even entered my head that I might miss the penalty, I never thought I’d miss it.
“It was disappointing, but hopefully we’ll go back there and set up a different ending. That’s the aim.”
Sunderland host Pompey on Saturday, before travelling to the south coast again on Thursday.
