Leao ordered to pay Sporting CP €16.5m; club owe compensation for moral harassment | OneFootball

Sporting CP have confirmed reports that came out in Thursday morning’s Portuguese newspapers regarding the compensation fee they are due from Rafael Leao.

Leao left the Lisbon-based club to join Lille on a free transfer in the summer of 2018 having ripped up his contract after Sporting players and staff were assaulted by fans at the club’s training ground.

A year later he made a big-money move to AC Milan and it was then revealed that Sporting – where he came through the academy – were not happy about the situation as they feel they were robbed of a transfer fee.

They took the matter to FIFA and asked for damages equal to €45million, a request which was rejected by the governing body, but reports then emerged today from Portugal claiming that Leao has been ordered to pay €16.5m in compensation to his old club.

Through an official statement, Sporting Lisbon confirmed the rumours reported this morning. Here is the press release…

“Sporting Lisbon informs, pursuant to and for the purposes of compliance with the information obligation deriving from Article 248-A of the Portuguese Securities Code, that it has been informed of the decision issued by the Sports Referee Court in the context of of the action proposed by the player Rafael Leao, who considers the action partially valid, ordering Sporting SAD to pay the player, by way of compensation for the practice of moral harassment, the amount of €40,000.00 (forty thousand euros), in addition to considering the counterclaim partially valid, ordering the player to pay Sporting SAD for an amount of €16,500,000.00 (sixteen million and five hundred thousand euros), as compensation for the illegal termination of the sports work contract.”
