By now you should be familiar with how the Leagues Cup works, but if you need it here’s a refresher.

The first of a double-header at the TQL stadium. FC Cincinnati earned a big win over Monterrey in Matchday 3, and FC Juarez handily dispatched Charlotte FC 4 – 1. So this should be a tantalizing fixture, with the winner in the driver’s seat for advancing.

Bizarre kickoff time on this one. Neither team has much to play for outside of pride today, both having lost their opening fixture. Theoretically, winning their next two gives each side a chance, but realistically their race is run.

Monterrey will be hopping mad after losing 3 – 2 to Cincinnati, on a night where they really didn’t perform poorly outside of conceding that 90th minute goal to Pavel Bucha. Red Bulls eked out a win over Gudalajara in the 97th minute from Emil Forsberg’s low, hard strike from a dead ball. These two are fairly even, with the slight edge to Monterrey. I believe the Rayados will pull this one out.

The Rapids were uncharacteristically merciless in their win over Santos, putting 70% of their shots on frame, and two in the net. Tijuana got thumped by LA Galaxy, allowing five goals. If each team repeats their Matchday 3 performance, Rapids will walk away with a big win. Let’s remember that goal difference really matters in this tournament.

In normal years, this would be an eagerly anticipated fixture between two storied sides from each league. But it’s not been a normal year for the Galaxy, and Cruz Azul travel south embarrassed by a 7 – 0 shellacking by Seattle. My gut says Cruz Azul will respond, and LA will bear the full brunt of their revenge.

So here’s the Seattle litmus test… was their big win over Cruz Azul a fluke? Or can they make lightning strike twice against Santos? The visitors struggled to put shots on frame in their opener, paying the price in a 2 – 1 loss to Colorado. Santos’ frustration manifested in 5 yellow cards, so lineup changes are possible.
