The group stage draw was conducted live on talkSPORT 2’s Social Show this afternoon with former England international Lianne Sanderson pulling the balls out of the hat.
The most eye-catching group is Group A with Barclays Women’s Super League rivals Manchester United and Liverpool set to meet. Everton also feature in the group, as do second tier side Newcastle United.
Group B sees the remainder of the northern clubs battle it out including North East rivals Durham and Sunderland while Group C has produced a South Coast derby with Portsmouth and Southampton set to meet.
Group D looks competitive with Birmingham City, Leicester City, Bristol City and Brighton & Hove Albion having been drawn together while Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa all feature in Group E.
In a move which mirrors what happened in the competition in 2023/2024, Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal have all been given byes to the quarter-finals which are expected to take place in early 2025. It should be noted that if Manchester City or Arsenal exit the UEFA Women’s Champions League in the qualifying rounds, they will enter the Women’s League Cup at the group stage. A further draw would be conducted to determine their group placings.
Full fixture dates and ticket details for all of the group stage matches will be revealed in due course.
Arsenal are the current Women’s League Cup holders after they defeated Chelsea 1-0 after extra-time in last season’s final at Wolverhampton Wanderers FC’s Molineux Stadium.
