Chelsea’s lead physiotherapist Steve Hughes is set to leave the Stamford Bridge outfit at the end of February after nearly 23 years at the club.

The news isn’t a surprise to anyone at Chelsea as the club announced via an email to members of the first team in September that he would resign in February.

Hughes joined the club back in 2001 as a part time physiotherapist with the academy before becoming head physio for the academy in 2004.

In 2015 Hughes became lead physio at Chelsea following a reshuffle in the medical department after the infamous departure of Eva Carniero following a bust up with then boss Jose Mourinho.

Since Chelsea were bought by Todd Boehly in the summer of 2022 there have already been a number of departures from the medical department amidst a restructuring.

Thierry Laurent who had been at the club for 17 years was let go back in September 2022 and Medical Director Dimitrios Kalogiannidis left the club in January this year after 13 years of service due to family reasons and club doctor Paco Biosca also leaving.

Chelsea have been plagued by injuries this season with the club being without a number of key players for large parts of the season and fans will be keen to know that the club are doing all they can to get to the bottom of the issue and are actively looking to make the right recruitments.

The Blues are set to be without eight players for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley.
